Angels & Demons: Important Quote

An important quote in the novel, Angels & Demons, is when Vittoria says, "Religion is like language or dress. We gravitate toward the practices which we were raised. In the end, though, we are all proclaiming the same thing. That life has meaning. That we are grateful for the power that created us." This quote is very important, because it reflects one of the main character's opinions on religion. In this novel, it seems as if people's opinions on religion take a very important role throughout the course of the novel, because their opinions on religion and science change due to scientific discoveries made by Leonardo Vetra. This quote means that your religion depends on where you were born. This quote also shows that one of the main characters, Vittoria Vetra, believes that it doesn't matter what religion you believe in. Vittoria believes that the type of religion doesn't matter, for they all point toward the same essential subject: How were we humans created? It is important that the reader knows Vittoria's perspective on religion, because I have noticed that as the story goes on, the characters' ideas on religion and science begin to change. I predict Vittoria's ideas about religion and science will change, which is why I think it is important for the reader to know her original idea about religion.

Angels & Demons: Connections

In the novel, Angels & Demons, by Dan Brown, I have noticed that the author makes very important connections to the world. Dan Brown clearly expresses through his work, different ideas and concepts of religion, science, and how the world began. These ideas are connected to society, because just like people in our world, characters in the book believe in different ideas of how the world started. For instance, the biggest idea about religion and science the author describes, is that of Leonardo Vetra's. This idea is that religion and science are actually closely related, and both prove the same concept of how the world came to be. Basically, Vetra believes that science proves God's existence. This idea is very unlike what other characters in the book thought. Most characters in the novel believed in a different idea of how the world came to be. These ideas were either religious or scientific, but definitely not both. Just like in society, different people in the novel believe in the big bang theory, God, evolution and unique ideas like that of Leonardo Vetra's. This is why this book closely relates to our world today.

Angels & Demons

I had recently just started the novel Angels and Demons, by Dan Brown. So far in the novel, symbiologist Robert Langdon receives a mysterious phone call from CERN, a nuclear research council in Europe. CERN notifies Langdon about a very mysterious outburst that has just happened. Miximilian Kohler, the director of CERN transports Langdon to CERN, which is located in Europe, in need of his help. Langdon discovers that CERN isn't just an ordinary research lab. CERN is composed of top scientists from different countries across the world. They make scientific miracles happen almost daily. Langdon then realizes something serious has just happened for him to be here. Leonardo Vetra, one of the most brilliant scientists of all time in the novel, has been murdered. Not only that, but a mysterious word has been branded across his chest. This word is illuminati. Langdon immediately recognizes this word from his research. Langdon explains to Kohler a historical story of how illuminati, the world's most powerful, old, and satanic cult came to be. This story involves both science and religion. No one knows why Vetra was murdered, or how the Illuminati relates to him. I predict that Langdon and Kohler will combine their knowledge of religion and science to reveal the cause of the murder. I also believe this novel will be similar to another one of Dan Brown's novels, Digital Fortress. I think just like in Digital Fortress, Angels and Demons will be filled with suspense, twists and turns, and action.

Complex Characters

Throughout the course of a novel, complex characters change due to their experiences in the novel. For instance, in the novel When the Emperor was Divine, the daughter is a complex character that goes through changes throughout the novel. She used to be a young girl who was very dramatic tried to act more mature and adult-like, but was really a little girl on the inside. She used to always value her family and spend a lot of time with them. However, toward the end of the novel, she reaches adolescence. She starts to spend less time with her family and more time with her friends. She becomes more independent. She even picks up the habit of smoking because of this. Textual evidence to support this is on page 92. It states," His sister left the barracks early in the morning and did not return until long after dark. She was always in a rush now. "Where are you going?" "Out." She ate all her meals with her friends. Never with the boy or his mother. She smoked cigarettes. He could smell them in her hair. As you can see, this quote proves that the daughter went through drastic changes. She valued her family less throughout the course of the story, and became more independent. Complex characters also interact with other characters differently throughout the course of the story as well. As i have mentioned, the daughter in the novel used to be with her family all they time. She ate meals with them, and bonded with both her mother and her brother frequently. Toward the end of the story, the daughter barely even interacts with her family at all. Textual evidence on page 92 states," One day he saw her standing in line at the mess hall in her Panama hate and she hardly seemed to recognize him at all." This quote shows that the daughter barely interacts with her family at all, because this quote describes a time in which the daughter does not even acknowledge her brother when he sees her in line at the mess hall. This shows a drastic difference in the daughter's interaction with her family in the beginning and ending of the novel. Finally, complex characters advance plot. The daughter in the novel advances plot, because her change in personality and interactions exaggerate how the experiences of the internment camps can affect people. The author was trying to show that the internment camps affected people in bad ways. This was a very important part of the plot, and the change in the daughter's actions helped explain this.

Novel article

The article is about how Julie Otsuka came up with the idea to write the novel, When the Emperor was Divine. The article shares that Julie Otsuka did not write the novel for political reasons, but just to understand what her mother went through during the hard times in internment camps. The article also shares how much to her surprise, Julie Otsuka's novel became a big hit in colleges and the United States itself, because of how relatable the topic can be to all religions and races.
